About Us

In 1953, Orthopaedic Associates was started by Dr. Robert Richards Sr., MD.  He was the only Orthopedic Surgeon in all of Franklin, Fulton, Adams, and Cumberland Counties, making house calls and performing surgeries in multiple hospitals.

He was the first surgeon in the 4 county region to perform IM Nailing surgical procedures of long bones in the 1960s.  This technique was originated by Dr. Kuncher during World War II.

Dr. Richards Sr. was also the first surgeon to perform total hip replacements in a non-teaching hospital in the state of Pennsylvania.  He did the first total hip in the early 1970s.

He opened a free Shriners Crippled Children’s Clinic in the early 1970s.  This benefited many underprivileged crippled children with orthopedic deformities including polio, scoliosis, cerebral palsy, and club foot.
